How to Build Radical Confidence with Lisa Bilyeu

Recently on Better Together with Maria, we interviewed Lisa Bilyeu, co-founder of billion dollar company Quest Nutrition and author of her new book titled Radical Confidence: 10 No-BS Lessons on Becoming the Hero of Your Own Life. Lisa shares with us how to build radical confidence and in describes it as “taking a set of tools” to move forward despite not feeling confident. Authentic radical confidence is not something that requires one to be a supernova, but to slowly build their confidence by taking small steps toward a goal. Lisa shared with us five tips for building radical confidence.

Lisa Bilyeu’ 5 Tips to Build Radical Confidence

1) Become self-aware about your confidence

Before building up radical confidence, we must assess ourselves internally. Oftentimes we are unaware of how low our confidence can be. We can get caught up in life and the mundaneness of it all, we don't notice. Lisa personally struggled with addressing her own self-confidence. She was so distracted with everyday life and couldn't see she was struggling in this area. You have to know what you’re working with first to ensure you’re taking the right steps forward towards building confidence.

2) Journal

Lisa says doing this act can help one break down the complexity of their emotions along with understanding why they are feeling a certain way. After becoming self-aware, Lisa recommends taking a week to write down and record the moments when those feelings of unbelief come to mind. If a negative thought comes to mind, we should pause and write it down. Then ask ourselves why we’re feeling this way. To tackle these thoughts, we have to reverse those statements. Once that thought is reversed, the next step would be figuring out what actions need to be taken that will lead us to becoming capable of that task or skill.

3) Change your belief system

Many times we often do not realize that our own belief system can hinder our confidence. Lisa said that having the belief system of being designated as a house wife set her back for eight years. This belief system did not allow her to evolve, achieve her dreams, or build her self-esteem. If a belief system is hindering growth in confidence Lisa recommends confronting that belief system and changing to a belief system that will yield growth.

4) Be ok with starting small

Building up confidence is something that does not happen overnight. Instead, it takes time and effort. It can be scary starting from scratch, but it’s during those moments that we start to build a foundation for that radical confidence. The confidence we build often comes from competence and building that competence comes from those initial baby steps.

5) Celebrate your wins along the way

Each time progress is made it deserves to be celebrated. No matter how big or small the accomplishment is because those small steps are leading you towards building that radical confidence. Celebrating small wins also allows one to value themselves more because the person is now able to see what they’ve accomplished and then it motivates them to keep moving forward with their journey.Lisa’s five tips for building radical confidence can help anyone in their confidence journey move forward to become the best version of themselves.
